Giving plants, getting votes
Thursday, April 23, 2009 at 08:52AM Wouldn't you know it that just a few days after I decided for sure that I am saving for a new Madsen Cargo Bike the company that makes the bikes is sponsoring a contest. In order to spread the word about their bikes, they are asking people to add buttons or links on their blog, website or twitter account. When readers click the link, the website is placed in the running to win one of two bikes. I have place a button on my sidebar and I hope people click on it! Considering how slow my money-saving is, I really hope I win! I sent an email to a few friends, and they have kindly clicked though for me- thanks friends!! For now though the stroller is working just fine, it's just slower and can't haul as much. We did haul a big picnic lunch, blanket and outdoor toys to Brushy Fork creek yesterday and had a great picnic with friends. I was 15 minutes late though, our walking is slow if Julian isn't riding his scooter. I haven't been driving a car around at all and I drove my car to Lexington yesterday to see the Earth movie. It was so strange to actually drive a car! It doesn't help that I was expecting it to break down at any minute, but I am appreciating the perspective of people who choose to go car-free more and more. There are quite a few car-free blogs out there and it's cool to see how different families meet their transportation needs in creative ways.
In other news, I am working to pot up a bunch of tomato seedlings, our family will be giving a bunch away next week for May Day. I love the idea of May Day, but I never have any flowers blooming at that time, it's too late for daffodils and too early for summer flowers. But I figured people would appreciate little tomato plants anyway! We have started 10 heirloom varieties and have hundreds of sturdy little plants. It's a good thing that the seed starting is going so well, because the rest of my gardening is slow going. We bought little peat pots at the Potting Shed, our local nursery. Julian and Avery helped cut up a broken mini-blind for labels.

Then I pricked out and potted up the plants.
They were crowded in their flat, I bet they appreciate the extra space! I hope they grow a bunch in the next week, collectively they look pretty good, but one little plant in a pot looks kinda sad! I am going to feed them with some fish emulsion over the weekend. That should help. I am keeping a few of each variety and I have a bunch of paste tomatoes too, I should really buy pots for them and transplant them as well. I think they can hold another week in the flat.
I am looking forward to gardening in the next week, the sunny weather should dry out the garden. I am working on making some raised beds at the house, but am trying to do it without spending any money, I need to find some salvaged lumber or stones.

I love the bike! I think it is amazing and a great idea! I also want to know how you got your tomatoes so big. Mine are still awfully small...
Hi Michelle! Isn't it the bike the coolest?! I started my tomatoes really early, and I was actually planning on them being a bit bigger at this point, but last year they were huge, and that's no good either, I had to keep re-potting them! It's different every year! I fertilized them with fish emulsion last year, and this year I forgot until this week.
