We're Katie, Michael, Julian and Avery. We used to have a farm. Way out in the country, we had 18 acres, goats, chickens, fruit trees, vegetable gardens and a mortgage. Last year we sold it to make it possible for us to be a one-income family. Now we live in town and rent a rambling old house. Being in town has benefits, like being able to walk to the library and farmer's market, get espresso on a whim. But what we like best about living in town is the sense of community. We live in the college town Berea, Kentucky and we feel lucky to have great neighbors, friends close by for our kids and a connection with a vibrant community. But we want it all, we want a farm and be in town. Impossible you say? Well, we are going to try our best to make it happen.
Last fall we had the incredible good fortune to obtain permission to garden close to our house. Within walking (or scootering, for Julian) distance, there was a site that had been a garden before, but was currently unused. (For more information, and some "before" pictures go see this post at the crafting blog my sister and I share.) Working with another family, we did garden it up last year, learned a lot and actually took notes so we won't make the same mistakes again.
Keep reading our blog because we want to bring some homestead-life to town and do a lot of cool stuff including: tap the maple trees in our yard to make maple syrup, build a cultivator from a bike frame, host a quilting bee and petition city council to change the "no-poultry in city limits" policy. Katie has a craft blog here and Michael has a music/art blog here.
